Longevity has increased by almost 15 years in the last 70 years due to advancements in medical and technological fields. Unfortunately, our teeth are not designed to last 80-90 years. Consequently, a substantial number of dental patients find themselves in need of dental implants, particularly as they age. But does age serve as an impediment to this solution? Let’s delve deeper into the subject of dental implants for seniors.
Contrary to some misconceptions, the notion that dental implants are unsuitable for seniors is false. Dental implants perform just as effectively in older patients as they do in their younger counterparts. Even when seniors suffer from osteoporosis in other parts of the body, they usually have strong enough bone to place dental implants. Also, even if seniors have been suffering from bone loss and tooth loss in their jaws for years, there is usually still enough bone to anchor dental implants. This treatment not only facilitates the maintenance of a healthier diet but also promotes a more active and sociable lifestyle for seniors.
A proficient dentist can execute the implant procedure with precision, resulting in a quicker recovery period. Most cases, seniors can expect to recover within 5-7 days, during which they may experience mild to moderate discomfort that can be efficiently controlled with medication.
There are 2 main treatment options:
The first treatment option is called “All-on-4” or “Teeth in a Day” protocol. This option required placement of 4 or 6 implants and attachment of fixed temporary teeth (bridges) to implants the day of the surgery. If a patient has remaining failing teeth, they can be extracted at the same time. After 4-6 months of healing, permanent teeth can be attached to the implants. The advantage of this protocol is that the teeth are attached to the implants the day of the surgery letting the gum to heal without dentures rubbing on them. With this protocol, the healing is fast and less painful. The chief advantage of this approach is the heightened level of comfort it immediately provides.
The second option is good for a senior who already wears dentures but wants additional retention and comfort. With this protocol, 2 or 4 implants are placed and allowed to heal for 4-6 months while a senior is wearing a denture. After implants are healed, the dentures are attached to the implants with special anchors. Although not as comfortable of a process as with fixed implant teeth, this option can give seniors better retention for their removable dentures and increase their ability to chew comfortably.
Teeth attached to Dental implants differ significantly from traditional dentures, as they eliminate the need for denture flanges or extensions. Additionally, they empower seniors to enjoy a more balanced diet, ensuring they receive adequate nutrition. Furthermore, the risk of accidental dislodgment due to movement is minimized. Dental implants also protect the jawbone, preventing further bone loss. Seniors can continue savoring their preferred foods without limitations.
