A Welcoming First Dental Visit

Your child’s first appointment is an opportunity to get to know our team, become familiar with the office, and begin building confidence in dental care. We explain what we are doing in language children can understand and encourage both children and parents to ask questions.

We review your child’s medical history, medications, allergies, and any concerns you have about their teeth or previous dental experiences. Parents are welcome to accompany their child during the initial examination and discuss what will help them feel most comfortable.

Before the appointment, describe the visit in simple, positive terms. You do not need to explain every instrument or procedure—we can introduce those during the visit.

When Should My Child First See a Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth appears, and no later than your child’s first birthday. Starting early gives parents an opportunity to discuss tooth development, brushing, feeding habits, and cavity prevention.

Baby teeth deserve attention even though they eventually fall out. They help children chew and speak, and they help maintain space for permanent teeth.

Preventive Checkups and Dental Cleanings

Regular examinations and cleanings help us follow your child’s dental development and identify concerns early. Many children benefit from visits approximately every six months, although the recommended schedule depends on their individual oral health.

Preventive care also continues at home. We can discuss brushing, flossing, food and drink choices, and questions about fluoride toothpaste as your child grows.

Dental Sealants

We offer dental sealants to help protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth. These thin protective coatings cover grooves where food and bacteria can collect, making those areas easier to keep clean. Sealants complement daily brushing and regular dental visits.

Tooth-Colored Fillings and Children’s Crowns

When a child develops a cavity, treatment depends on the extent of the damage. Smaller cavities may be repaired with tooth-colored composite fillings. A more extensively damaged tooth may need a crown for additional protection.

Our pediatric practice uses tooth-colored fillings and metal-free crowns. If your child has allergies or sensitivities, please tell us before treatment so we can review the materials being considered.

Tooth Development, Spacing, and Orthodontic Concerns

As baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, we monitor spacing and dental development. If you have concerns about crowding, your child’s bite, or whether orthodontic treatment may be needed, bring them to your appointment so we can discuss the appropriate next steps.

When a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected, a space maintainer may be recommended to help preserve room for the permanent tooth. The decision depends on the tooth involved and your child’s development.

Tooth Extractions

If a tooth needs to be removed, we explain the reason, discuss comfort options, and provide instructions for care afterward.

Dental Injuries and Sports Mouthguards

We evaluate dental injuries involving teeth and surrounding tissues. If your child chips, loosens, or knocks out a tooth, contact our office promptly for guidance and an assessment of the next steps.

We also offer protective mouthguards for children who participate in sports. A properly fitted mouthguard helps protect teeth and the surrounding soft tissues from injury. Ask us about an appropriate option for your child’s activities.

Helping Anxious Children Feel More Comfortable

Some children need extra reassurance during dental visits. Please let us know about previous difficult experiences, sensory sensitivities, or anything else that may affect your child’s comfort.

Our team starts with communication and explanations suited to your child’s age. For children who need additional support, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, and sedation options, including IV sedation for appropriately selected patients.

Sedation recommendations depend on your child’s health, treatment needs, and ability to participate in care. Before proceeding, the dental and anesthesia team will review the proposed approach, benefits, risks, alternatives, and preparation instructions with you.

Dental Care for the Whole Family

Tribeca Little Smiles is part of Tribeca Advanced Dentistry, allowing children and adults to receive care within the same practice. While Dr. Azita focuses on children’s oral health, our broader dental team provides general dentistry and specialty services for adults.

For families, this means a familiar office and a team that can help coordinate care as dental needs change over time.

Pediatric Dental Insurance and Financing

Our practice participates in a range of major PPO dental insurance plans. Network participation and benefits vary by the specific plan and treating dentist, so please contact us to confirm your child’s coverage before the appointment.

Our team can review available insurance information, explain estimated patient costs, and discuss payment options. If your child does not have dental insurance, contact us for current self-pay pricing. Financing options may also be available, subject to the provider’s approval and terms.
